A Tunisian first-instance court sentenced Ennahda movement Secretary General Ajmi Lourimi and activist Moussab al-Gharbi to three years in prison, Mosaique FM radio reported on Saturday.
Lourimi was arrested in 2024 in the town of Tebourba while traveling in one vehicle with an Ennahda activist who was wanted in two terrorism-related cases.
Lourimi was reportedly accused of failing to notify authorities of information he had obtained regarding a terrorist crime . Al-Gharbi was brought to trial on charges related to providing shelter to a terrorism suspect.
The criminal chamber at the Tunis Court of Appeal that hears terrorism cases referred the case of Lourimi and al-Gharbi to the criminal chamber of a first-instance court and denied al-Gharbi pretrial release.
The Ennahda movement was founded by Rached Ghannouchi in 1981 and became a major political party after the 2011 revolution, winning a majority in the constituent assembly and participating in subsequent coalition governments. In 2016, Ennahda announced the separation of its political and religious activities. Since 2023, several party members have received prison sentences on various charges.
