The election defeat suffered by Fidesz will not change the fact that the surge of patriotic political organisations, communities and parties continues in Europe, Fidesz president Viktor Orbán told a press conference in Brussels on
Wednesday.
“One single election or election defeat will not overwrite this process,” he continued. “We expect that this will remain so in the whole of Europe. Anti-immigration and pro-sovereignty forces will continue to grow stronger in Eu-
rope.”
This process can be stopped only if the EU leadership could present successes, he said, “but we are living in times when the EU leadership can present fiascos rather than successes.”
He referred to security issues, the RussiaUkraine war, competitiveness and migration. Regarding Transcarpathian Hungarians, Orbán said he hopes that the Ukrainians will honour the agreement signed with Hungary but he considers it a mistake that the EU has launched accession negotiations with Ukraine.
On the bill passed by Parliament forbidding him to seek a third term as prime minister, Orbán said “Hungary is a 1,000-year-old state, and we have a great deal of experience in how to exclude leaders from running the state: You can pour hot lead into their ears, gouge out the eyes of pretenders to the throne, and then there’s exile, but compared to that, I got off easily, with only a constitutional ban.”
Asked about the football World Cup, Orbán said he has tickets for the two semi-finals and the final and he is planning a six-day trip.
