Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles on Monday called on Moroccan authorities to investigate the causes of the migration crisis in Ceuta.
“I ask the Moroccan government to conduct an investigation and find out what happened with this activity on social networks,” she told reporters.
Spain’s sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be subject to any encroachments, Robles stressed .
“Now it is necessary to state the following very clearly: the army will continue to remain in Ceuta, providing support to the Civil Guard. It must be absolutely clear that those behind what happened – criminal groups – or those who allowed this to happen, will have to bear responsibility,” she added.
At the end of July, the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, located in North Africa and bordering Morocco, experienced a mass influx of migrants. Spain deployed additional police, Civil Guard and armed forces units there. On July 31, the city’s Mayor-President Juan Jesus Vivas said that about 60,000 people had entered Ceuta within 24 hours.
