Hungarian Parliament Votes to Suspend Prime Minister Magyar’s Parliamentary Immunity

None

The Hungarian parliament has voted to suspend Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s parliamentary immunity, according to the broadcast on the parliament’s website on Monday.

All 139 lawmakers present at the meeting voted unanimously to suspend Magyar’s parliamentary immunity, while lawmakers from the Fidesz party and the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) boycotted the vote.

The parliament also voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of two other lawmakers, Balazs Hanko from the Fidesz party and Miklos Sesztak from the KDNP, who used to be ministers in former Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government . Both are suspected of criminal mismanagement of public funds and accepting bribes.

In June 2024, Magyar got into a verbal altercation with a man in a Budapest club after he filmed the politician. Magyar took the man’s phone and then threw it into the Danube River.

Magyar was a member of the European Parliament at the time of the crime, which subsequently refused to waive his immunity at the request of Hungarian law enforcement agencies. In May 2026, Magyar took office as a member of the Hungarian parliament, prompting the prosecutor’s office to waive his immunity in Hungary in order to reopen the theft investigation.
