Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Saturday admitted that his Fidesz party made serious mistakes during the elections campaign, and completely lost the battle over the young generation in the digital realm, which led to its defeat.
On Saturday, the Fidesz party congress adopted a document, listing 10 reasons for the party’s loss in the elections.
“The election campaign did not work out, the opponent turned out to be much more attractive . We were heading for victory until the very end, without noticing the opponent’s advantages, so we did not adjust the campaign strategy,” Orban said.
He also added that Fidesz underestimated the high voter turnout and the mobilization capabilities of the Tisza party, as well as “failed to address the hate campaign launched against it.”
“We suffered a catastrophic defeat in the digital space, we failed in the battle for the attention of young people. Algorithms controlled from abroad prioritized everything that served the change of government. Our warnings about the threat of war were neutralized,” Orban said.
At the same time, he added that his government managed to develop a strategy to respond to economic stagnation in Europe and did not take on unreal economic obligations. Currently Hungary sees a new liberal government opposed by a nationalist opposition, albeit Fidezs is so far “unable to be a successful opposition party” after 16 years in power, which requires a lot of work to do, Orban added.
On April 12, Hungary held parliamentary elections. The Tisza Party secured 141 seats in the Hungarian parliament, while the alliance of the Fidesz party and the Christian Democratic People’s Party received 52 seats.
