Poland bars Hungary from celebration of new EU presidency

Poland withdrew its invitation to Hungarian ambassador István Íjgyártó to attend the opening event of the Polish EU presidency in Warsaw on Friday.

Poland was angered by Hungary’s recent decision to grant political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, the former Polish deputy Justice Minister, after Poland issued an international warrant for his arrest to face charges of participation in organised crime and misuse of public funds, among others.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski sent a diplomatic note to the Hungarian ambassador, explaining the decision.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told HVG that Poland’s decision was “pathetic” and “childish”.
