Eight more could be purchased later, more precisely around 2028. Algerian air force pilots are now training in Russia to operate this ultramodern aircraft. The Algerian authorities took care to consult the American authorities before formalizing this important military order. Algiers has undertaken in-depth contacts with Washington to avoid being threatened by the CAATSA (Countering Opponents of America Through Sanction Act), a law that allows the US executive to implement severe sanctions against the defence industry clients of US adversaries, including Russia.
