Sahara conflict : Algeria seeks support from Russia to thwart Morocco in C-24 UN Commission

On June 3, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin received Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in Moscow Boumediene Gennad at his request.

According the russian diplomacy, the conversation focused on the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly’s Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24). The Algerian request mainly concerns the Sahara question. Algeria is seeking Algerian support in the UN commission at a time when Morocco is expanding the circle of countries supporting its cause.

The current Russian-Algerian cooperation in the UN Security Council on various issues on its agenda, including conflicts in the Middle East, North Africa and the Sahara-Sahel region, was also considered. The closeness of the positions of Russia and Algeria in key areas of modern international relations was confirmed.
