New York: Morocco Elected to UN Economic and Social Council

The Kingdom of Morocco was elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term during elections held on Thursday in New York.

Morocco received 178 out of 187 votes from member states present and voting.

This election, marked by an impressive result and massive support from member states, reinforces the confidence placed by the international community in the Kingdom’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development, and international cooperation. It demonstrates the credibility and consistency of Morocco’s actions as a constructive player dedicated to promoting a diplomacy based on dialogue, solidarity, and mutual respect.

Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco steadfastly pursues its commitment to a renewed, effective, and solidarity-based multilateralism, grounded in the principles of the UN Charter, dialogue among nations, and the search for concerted solutions to shared challenges.

Established by the UN Charter, ECOSOC is one of the Organization’s six principal organs. It directs and coordinates the economic, social, and cultural activities of the UN system. At the heart of the multilateral architecture, ECOSOC oversees the follow-up to major United Nations conferences and summits.

Its key segments include the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Humanitarian Affairs Segment, and the Forum on Financing for Development; each contributes to structuring collective action across the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social, and environmental. Morocco attaches particular importance to ECOSOC as a central organ of the United Nations system.

At a time when the international community faces multiple and interconnected challenges, the Kingdom remains convinced of ECOSOC’s essential role in strengthening the coherence of the United Nations development system and accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Drawing on its national experience and its regional and international engagement, Morocco intends to actively contribute to consolidating the Council’s role as a platform for coordinating stakeholders, including Member States, international institutions, the private sector, civil society, and academia.

The Kingdom will continue to actively contribute to the work of the Council and its subsidiary bodies, particularly in the areas of sustainable development, UN development system reform, financing for development, and South-South and triangular cooperation.

Guided by its commitment to the values of solidarity, dialogue, and shared responsibility, Morocco will work during its term to make ECOSOC an even more effective and inclusive instrument for addressing the priorities of developing countries.
