Spain and Morocco finalise the opening of customs in Ceuta and Melilla

El País advances that in days they will be operational, Government Delegation in Ceuta does not confirm anything about the transit of goods through Tarajal until the information reaches it officially

Spain and Morocco are reportedly finalising the opening of customs in Ceuta and Melilla in the coming days. The information was advanced this Thursday by the newspaper El País, which also specifies that the commercial exchange will initially be one truck a day in each direction, but will not be limited to products manufactured by the Spanish side.

El Faro de Melilla had already advanced in its edition of this January 1 that the delegate of the Government of the sister city was maintaining contacts with Melilla businessmen to indicate that Morocco would introduce its aggregates, fruits, vegetables and fish into Melilla, while conversely the neighboring country would allow the entry of products that had not yet been specified.

El Faro de Ceuta asked the Government Delegation if the same conversations were taking place here, to which the administration of the Plaza de los Reyes has only replied that they have been talking to businessmen forever, but that if there is any news it would be transferred by Cristina Pérez herself when it was official.

El País takes for granted what is still not confirmed in Ceuta, which is nothing more than the opening of its customs office and the reopening of the one in Melilla, closed in 2018.

There is no date, it is only confirmed that they will open, but it is specified that it would be in the next few days.

There will be a “not very significant” commercial exchange, since it will be subject to strong limitations, indicates the national media, contemplating that initially only one truck will circulate daily through each customs post in each direction. Vans and containers will not be accepted, transit will be from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and public holidays will be suspended in either country.

According to the newspaper, Spain will import fresh products from Morocco, such as fruits, vegetables and fish; while it will export hygiene and cleaning products, household appliances and electronics.

The big doubts are about the traveller regime, without anything being clear about it.
