War in Ukraine : “no Hungarian soldiers should participate”, Forein minister said

Forein minister of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, announced that Hungary faces an elemental struggle in the coming weeks regarding a NATO proposal opposed by the government. Despite significant pressure, the government plans to abstain from any involvement in training Ukrainian soldiers or arms shipments.

During a Fidesz parliamentary group meeting, Szijjártó highlighted NATO’s shift from its own established red lines, which initially stated the alliance would not participate in the Ukraine conflict and would avoid confrontation with Russia. The proposal aims to increase NATO’s role in coordinating arms shipments and training Ukrainian forces and introduces a significant funding package, all of which Hungary intends to avoid.

Minister Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s stance: no Hungarian soldiers should participate, no actions of this type should occur on Hungarian territory, and no Hungarian taxpayer money should be used for these purposes. He noted the tremendous pressure to conform but asserted that Hungary remains resolute in its opposition within the alliance.
