Ryad Mezzour calls for stronger economic partnership between Morocco and India

During the Gujarat Summit, Morocco’s Trade Minister, Ryad Mezzourr, said that it is time for Morocco and India to forge a “stronger,  more dynamic partnership”.

Speaking as part of a Moroccan delegation at the second annual Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in the state of Gujarat, India, Mezzour gave an address commending India’s industrial success.  He also expressed  Morocco’s willingness to boost ties with India under the framework of South-South cooperation.

“Bharat is the best and the most competitive country in producing cars,” Mezzour said, notably referring to India using the constitutional name ‘Bharat,’ usually used to showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage.

The Moroccan minister further took the opportunity to shed light on the potential for bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries.  “Thanks to our ideal position as a continental and world-class hub…Morocco and Bharat can work closely through a South-South triangular cooperation to promote growth in Africa, India, and the world,” he said.

According to Mezzour, a strategic partnership between Morocco and India would enable the two countries “to develop joint initiatives that include the entire African continent in the process of industrializing and developing economies, but also to ensure food and health.”

Held between Jan. 10 and Jan. 12, the Gujarat summit aims to bring together business leaders, investors, corporations, thought leaders, policy and opinion makers. The summit’s primary objective is to promote bilateral economic ties and promote Gujarat as an investment destination.

The Moroccan delegation included representatives from the National Agency for Exports and Investment (AMDIE). As part of their participation in the event, AMDIE took part in a session titled “Morocco-India: for a stronger economic partnership.” The session featured speeches by Mohammed Maliki, Ambassador of Morocco to New Delhi, Shri Rushikesh Patel, Minister of Health and Family Welfare of Gujarat, and Rajiv Dube, Honorary Consul of Morocco in India.

Following these sessions, Assia Bensaad, Director of Cooperation and Partnerships at AMDIE, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Association of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.  The agreement aims to facilitate foreign direct investment between the two countries.
