Poland’s President “understands” Finland’s border policy

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda met with Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö who started his official visit to Poland on Monday. The two heads of state held talks about Subjects varying from security to immigration. Polish President assured his Finnish counterpart of Poland’s “understanding” of the situation, as Finland has decided to close four border crossings.

“We understand the situation in which Finland finds itself today. We support the decisions taken by the Finnish authorities; we assure you of support; should Finland need this support, we will try to provide it,” the Polish president emphasized. This assessment was made during Finland’s Niinistö official visit to Poland, that started monday.

“Above all, we talked about security issues. We talked about the migratory pressure we see today on the Russian-Finnish border, primarily from Russia. We have no doubt that today, on the border with Russia, Finland is facing a similar phenomenon that we have been facing here [in Poland] since 2021, that is, in short, a hybrid attack on the Finnish border, which is implemented by pushing groups of migrants to the border,” Duda said.

From his part, Finland’s President stressed that security and peace are the most important issues currently facing the EU, much more than trade and the economy. According to him, security was always the most important factor for individuals and families to be able to live in peace.

He also pointed out that visiting Poland is “extremely important” to him in the context of strengthening relations between the two countries.

Finland on Saturday closed four border crossings with Russia to halt a flow of asylum seekers, claiming Russia instigated the movement. The allegations were almost immediately denied by The Kremlin.

“We do not accept such accusations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

“Border crossings are used by those who have the right to do so,” he added, calling Finland’s accusations “far-fetched”.
