Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó put forward a proposal for declaring the far-left Antifa movement a terrorist organisation in a letter to EU High Representative for
Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. He said that persons and groups attached to the ideology of Antifa (a term derived from the phrase “anti-fascist”) have carried out a number of terrorist attacks in the EU in recent
years, in Germany, France and Italy, among others.
Foreigners from Antifa physically assaulted five people in Budapest in February, 2023, then fled to other member states of the EU, which have not extradited them to Hungary.
In one case, criminal proceedings had to be suspended after a suspect was elected to the European Parliament and so she was granted immunity, he wrote.
These acts prove that Antifa constitutes a major threat to the security of EU citizens, said Szijjártó.
