US Energy Secretary Chris Wright declared that Hungary and Slovakia should stop buying Russian fossil fuels, as he addressed a gathering in Brussels on Friday.
“The more we can reduce Russia’s ability to finance this murderous war, the better off we all are”, he said. Politico quoted Wright as calling on the EU’s remaining buyers of Russian fossil fuels to drop their campaign against the bloc’s efforts to end dependency on Russia and buy from the US instead.
Asked whether countries like Hungary and Slovakia, which have opposed efforts in the European Commission to phase out Russian gas, should suspend their ties with the Kremlin, Wright replied: “Absolutely.” He said they want to cut off all Russian gas.
Wright spoke on Friday at an event in Brussels with officials on how to increase imports of American liquefied natural gas and cut off the flow of funds for Russia’s war on
Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump would reportedly only be willing to impose new sanctions on Russia if NATO members impose a complete embargo on Russian oil and gas.
