Prime Minister Viktor Orbán hosted Vyacheslav Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress (EJC), in his office on Wednesday evening, MTI reported.
Journalist Szabolcs Panyi noted that Kantor, also known as Vyacheslav Vladimirovich Kantor, is a Russian businessman previously sanctioned by the EU for his close ties to Vla-
dimir Putin.
Kantor, who also holds Israeli and British citizenship, met in Budapest not only with Orbán but also with the leadership of the Jewish federation Mazsihisz and János Bóka,
Hungary’s minister for EU affairs. Kantor was removed from the EU sanctions list earlier this year after lobbying by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and the Hungarian government, which reportedly threatened to withhold support for the six-month extension of EU sanctions on Russia unless several oligarchs, Kantor, among them, were del-
isted.
Kantor remains subject to sanctions in the UK, Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania. He served as EJC president in 2017-22 but resigned due to sanctions before being reelected in May of this year.
