An Air Algerie flight landed Thursday afternoon at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport, marking the Algerian state-owned carrier’s resumption of direct service to Lebanon after a hiatus of more than a year.

The resumption, with two weekly flights, was agreed during a meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers on July 29.

Welcoming the first flight at the airport, Lebanese Minister of Information Paul Morcos described it as a “fruit” of bilateral friendship and expressed hope for further cooperation in media, energy, reconstruction and trade, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Also at the airport, Algerian Ambassador to Lebanon Kamal Bou Shama highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two countries, adding that a packed cooperation agenda would follow, the NNA said.

On Aug. 1, 2024, Air Algerie announced it was canceling flights to Lebanon amid rising tensions between Hezbollah and Israel. The carrier did not specify the reasons for the decision, saying only that it was “temporary until further notice.”
