Belgium : MR leader submit a bill to the Federal Parliament aimed at recognising Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara

As part of a trip to Morocco, the president of the MR Georges-Louis Bouchez led a series of political and diplomatic meetings with the aim of strengthening ties between Belgium and the Kingdom of Morocco. These initiatives are part of a long-term vision based on judicial cooperation, shared security and support for a political plan for the stability of this region of Morocco.

This trip was an opportunity for the president of the MR to announce the submission of a bill to the Federal Parliament aimed at recognising Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, as well as the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco. According to Georges-Louis Bouchez, this plan is the only credible way towards a lasting, realistic and peaceful solution to this long-standing conflict. The President recalled that the region is today a territory of development, stability and peace under Moroccan administration, as he was able to see himself during his visits to Laayoune and Dakhla.

The MR, faithful to its line of diplomatic clarity, believes that the adoption of its resolution is a responsible step towards peace. It would also clarify the Belgian position in a context where historical neutrality no longer reflects current geopolitical developments. This position does not call into question the principles of international law, but aims to encourage a realistic political solution, in line with the expectations on the ground.

More broadly, this initiative is part of the MR’s desire to build solid and balanced relations with international partners who share common challenges with Belgium.

During his stay, Georges-Louis Bouchez also met in Rabat with the Moroccan Minister of Justice, Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi. They faced the common challenges that our two countries face, particularly in the fight against drug trafficking, terrorism and organized crime. It must be possible to monitor, convict and enforce sentences in an effective and coordinated manner. The security of Belgian citizens, as well as that of Moroccans, depends on this direct and structured collaboration between our respective judicial institutions.
