Algerian Minister of State Ahmed Attaf, has affirmed that any solution to the Western Sahara issue that contradicts the decolonization process remains merely a myth.
During a press conference in Algiers to present the results of Algerian diplomacy for the year 2024, Ahmed Attaf stated, “We affirm that any formula for a solution to the Western Sahara issue that contradicts the decolonization process is a myth, such as the autonomy proposal.”
Algeria has reacted in this way in a context of international isolation. Most of the international community now supports the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has claimed that the autonomy plan is a French creation, which shows the extent of the frustration reigning in Algiers
Algeria has suffered several setbacks on the Sahara issue after several countries officially supported Moroccan sovereignty, including influential countries such as the United States, France and Spain in addition to a dozen other countries.
Even if Algeria says it is not a party to the conflict, it behaves as such. This is why Morocco and Algeria participate in the negotiations as a sponsor of the Polisario, which cannot exist without political and military support.
