Morocco : Royal pardon for thousand of people prosecuted in cases related to cannabis cultivation

On the occasion of the anniversary of the King and People’s Revolution, King Mohammed VI has granted pardon to 685 individuals, some of whom are in detention and others at liberty, who were convicted by various courts in the Kingdom, announced the Ministry of Justice in a statement.

These 685 people are accounted for as follows:

The beneficiaries of the Royal Pardon who are in detention number 548 and are divided as follows:

– 15 detainees benefited from full pardon over the remaining prison or confinement sentence.

– 529 detainees had their prison or confinement sentence reduced.

– 4 detainees had their life sentences commuted to fixed-term sentences.

The beneficiaries of the Royal Pardon who are at liberty number 137 and are divided as follows:

– 26 people benefited from pardon over the prison sentence or its remainder.

– 8 people had their prison sentence pardoned and their fines maintained.

– 98 people benefited from pardon over their fines.

– 4 people benefited from pardon over both prison and fine sentences.

– 1 person benefited from pardon over the fine and the remaining prison term.

On this same glorious national occasion, His Majesty the King has graciously granted pardon to 4,831 people who were convicted, prosecuted, or wanted in cases related to cannabis cultivation, meeting the required conditions to benefit from the pardon.

Thus, beyond its humanitarian aspects, this High Royal Solicitude will allow the beneficiaries of this pardon to integrate into the new strategy undertaken by the concerned provinces, following the establishment of the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities, and in the structuring impact of its activity on economic and social levels through the industrialization, processing, export of cannabis, and the import of its products for medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial purposes, as well as its contribution to the development of alternative crops and non-agricultural activities.

Royal pardon is customary in Morocco to mark national and religious holidays.
