Rachid Talbi Alami, of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), was re-elected on Friday Speaker of the House of Representatives for the remainder of the current legislature, at a plenary session held to mark the opening of the second session of the 2023-2024 legislative year.
Talbi Alami, the parliamentary majority’s candidate, received 264 of the 324 votes cast, against 23 for his sole opponent Abdellah Bouanou, president of the Justice and Development Party parliamentary grouping, with 37 invalid ballots.
The election of the Lower House’s Speaker for the remainder of the parliamentary term (2021-2026) took place in accordance with the House’s rules of procedure, which stipulate that the Speaker is elected at the start of legislation, then in the 3rd year, during the April session, and for the remainder of the term, in application of the provisions of article 62 of the Constitution.
