Aminatou Haidar fears her expulsion from Spanish territory. “My situation is now irregular and if they want to deport me, they can do so. When I go out on the street, I feel like I’m illegal. At any moment the police can arrest me,” she said in statements to an Iberian media outlet.
In December, the spanish authorities informed Ms. Haidar that her application to renew her residence card had been rejected. Since then, her lawyer has filed an administrative appeal against this decision.
Aminatou Haidar said the refusal was a “political decision”. “I feel like a victim of the government’s policies, especially the socialist ones,” she said. It was a way for her to spare her friends in the far-left coalition, Sumar, a member of the executive chaired by the socialist Pedro Sanchez.
Aminatou Haidar is one of the most active pro-Polisario activists. Her connections with the leaders of the Polisario front and Algeria are proven.
