Hungary Supports Extending Sanctions Against Russia Annually

Hungary expressed support for a proposal to extend sanctions against Russia annually, rather than every six months, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.

In May, Politico reported that the European Union was considering extending sanctions against Russia annually, rather than every six months.

During a meeting of EU ambassadors on Wednesday, Hungary joined a group of countries in expressing support for a 12-month extension, which European Council President Antonio Costa will propose later this month, the report said on Thursday .

Hungary had previously agreed to extend anti-Russian sanctions for only six months, the report recalled.

Russian officials have repeatedly stated that the country will withstand the sanctions pressure that the West began imposing several years ago and continues to intensify. Moscow has argued that the West lacks the courage to admit the failure of its sanctions against Russia. At the same time, voices have been raised within Western countries themselves suggesting that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective.
