The autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to settle the artificial conflict created around its territorial integrity is the “only solution” to bring this regional conflict to a definitive close, Former Spanish Defense Minister, José Bono, said on Thursday.
The Moroccan autonomy plan is the “only possible, reasonable, credible and effective solution to settle this conflict which has dragged on for far too long and to put an end to the suffering of the people living in inhuman conditions in the Tindouf camps,” Bono told MAP on the sidelines of the 3rd International Conference for Dialogue and Peace, held in Las Palmas.
“What the Saharawis need are solutions to their problems, and the autonomy plan is the best solution for bringing this issue to a definitive close through negotiations between all parties,” he stressed, adding that the ‘polisario’ was still sticking to outdated positions.
Speaking at the opening session of this international conference, the former Spanish minister said that Morocco had made “considerable progress” in recent years in all areas, praising the fruitful cooperation between Morocco and Spain at all levels.
In this respect, he underlined the “important role” played by Morocco in the fight against terrorism, and its contribution to security and stability in the region.
